Blogroll, Vista Media Center

Snapstream has released the latest version 4.6 of Beyond TV, its popular television recording software. I use Beyond TV on my Windows XP computer to record over the air high definition TV, and in my opinion, it is the best DVR software outside of Windows Media Center.

According to Snapstream’s release notes, the following new features were added:

– Microsoft Vista 32bit Compatibility for Beyond TV and Firefly Mini.
– Web Based DivX streaming supported.
– Support for Hauppauge HVR-1600 in dual tuner (ATSC/NTSC) mode.
– Added previous day log viewer to the Web Admin.
– Added setting to mark generic episodes (episodes without specific airing info) as new.
– Beyond TV 4.6 SDK updates.

With the inclusion of Media Center software into Microsoft’s Vista, the latest version of Windows, I wonder how much of a future Beyond TV has in the living room. The cost for Beyond TV is $69.99, which is not bad, but the OEM version of Vista Home Premium costs $130. Also, as Vista becomes the default operating system for Dell and other large OEMs, the average consumer will have no need to buy Beyond TV. Snapstream, sensing the threat from Vista, has posted a comparison of Beyond TV and Vista Media Center, highlighting Beyond TV’s Smartskip commercial skipping feature.
